Congratulations
Little Sister!
My baby sister, Aliza is now a high school graduate! She has worked so hard these past four years and has grown so much; I couldn't be more proud of her! It doesn't seem that long ago that we dropped her off for her first day of high school on the way to moving me into the dorms for my first year of college. And now she's the one who will be moving onto campus as a freshman Husker. I am so excited for her and this new stage of life. I completely loved college and it is so exciting that she will soon get to experience the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Even though I know she is feeling the sting of leaving high school, I also know that as the new era of college student begins, that nostalgia will quickly be replaced.
This is the graduation song I wrote for my sister:
In the icy Nebraska winter, 12th day of the 1st month in '93
Through the frosty glass of a small town window pane you'd see
Two worn out parents and a room full of joy for the new life in this world
A bundle of cloth & curious 3-year-old eyes, as they handed my sister to me
We grew up playing games, trying to be tomboys, riding bikes to school, matching clothes, & doing hair
Took it for granted you were always with me you followed everywhere
Painfully, unknowingly knew not the sweetness of that time
Because as years go by and you found your way, I look for my shadow & it's not there
Now you're 571 miles from me as I write for you this song
I come home to find a tiny pearl inside an oyster you've become
so beautiful and strong
I wish we were together not apart like how it was when we
were young
But I love you and the distance between sisters hearts
can never be too long.
Recall what you've learned
Remember where you've been
Let this life, for you begin
I pray that you're heart be soaked with just being
That it drips with every beating
And you, you drink it all in.
Congratulations, Aliza! I can't wait to see what the world has in store for you.
Love,
Your sister.
Love,
Your sister.
